The Pavilion

The United States Pavilion is designed to introduce visitors from all over the world to the leading role America plays in developing the future of global mobility. The Pavilion is the convergence of the ideas and technologies that will move us towards the future as we reach across cultures and borders to build a better tomorrow for all. Every decision made in designing the United States experience is informed by the same question asked of all our guests: “What Moves You?”

Experience

Driven by a passion for making lives better, a consortium of 13 leading American organizations has pored over every detail to create a unique journey through American innovation. The Pavilion is a space where guests experience the thrill of American firsts from the past, present, and future.

Moving People

The main attraction of the pavilion features an immersive Virgin Hyperloop One experience. Guests will enter the Hyperloop in Dubai, and emerge in The United States, setting the tone for an experience that transports our visitors in another way - from the present to the future. As visitors walk down a 3-story winding pathway of mobility experiences, the exciting future of American ingenuity unfolds further.

Moving Cities

This exhibit will showcase the city of the future and how it will solve mobility challenges of traffic, utilities, first responder management, and many other mobility challenges. Visitors will get to experience the future of urban planning, from more efficient metro systems to more integrated city networks.

Moving Ideas

Digital mobility means collapsing distance between people, ideas, and transactions through the instant movement of data around the world. We will bring in the latest in ideation technology, including virtual reality, brain-connected technology, and much more.

Moving Lives

This zone will express mobility in the form of human health and fitness, including emotionally rich experiences of advances in the efficacy of 3D printed prosthetics, tele-robotic surgical procedures, and wearable tech. Guests will have a first-hand look at the future of medical and athletic technology, including wearable exoskeletons, 3D printed organs, and smarter hospital management systems.

Moving Goods

Mobility is central to the global economy. This zone allows visitors to witness, control, and interact with the drones and robotics that will define the future of commerce. The future of commerce – from automated vehicles, to more efficient port designs, to faster and more accurate tracking systems, will all be on display.

Moving Beyond

What will life be like on Mars? Our visitors will experience a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Mars led by visionaries like Buzz Aldrin. The zone also highlights and captures the spirit of the US - UAE collaboration in our shared plan to journey to Mars in 2021.

Moving Capital

Capital flows are changing. Visitors will see how the U.S. is leading the way in bringing resources and investment to billions. Through technology-driven changes in our bankings systems, we can extend access to loans and capital to more people around the world than ever before. This exhibit will highlight the future of crowdfunding, blockchain, money transfer applications, and much more.

Moving Everything

Digital mobility means collapsing distance between people, ideas, and transactions through the instant movement of data around the world. Everything from flying cars to personal rocket ships to nanotechnology will be on display here – guests should be prepared for a show that broadens their horizons of what’s possible through America innovation.

Founded by Curtis Fentress in 1980, the firm passionately pursues the creation of iconic public architecture. Known for his “patient search,” Curtis Fentress, FAIA, RIBA, has designed $42 billion of architectural landmarks worldwide, visited by more than half a billion people each year. As a testament to the firm’s solution-driven and creative design approach, projects designed by Fentress have been honored with over 550 awards for innovation and excellence.

Fentress is internationally known for innovative, award-winning design of airports, museums, convention centers, laboratories, higher education, civic, and government buildings. Additionally, the firm designs office, mixed-use, religious and residential buildings. Curtis Fentress is internationally recognized for the design of Denver International Airport, voted “Best Airport in North America” by Business Traveler Magazine readers six consecutive years (2005 – 2010). Fentress’ last project in Dubai – the “Dancing Sisters” towers, was an enormous success, and they are prepared to deliver again on this next project.

USC Center on Public Diplomacy


The USC Center on Public Diplomacy (CPD) was established in 2003 as a partnership between the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and the School of International Relations at the University of Southern California. It is a research, analysis, and professional education organization dedicated to furthering the study and practice of global public engagement and cultural relations.

CPD is a recognized leader in the public diplomacy research and scholarship community and is the definitive go-to destination for practitioners and international leaders in public diplomacy while pursuing an innovative research agenda designed to bridge the study-practice gap. This agenda includes advancing research into global pavilions and the impact thereof, and how nations use branding principles to increase their soft power. Principles laid out in CPD Director Jay Wang’s book, Shaping China’s Global Imagination: Branding Nations at the World Expo are incorporated into the American pavilion’s design.

Middle East Council of American Chambers of Commerce is a non-profit organization that promotes and represents American businesses in the Gulf region. The organization fosters American business activities and encourages United States government policies. Additionally, it promotes trade and investment, cross-cultural exchange, and mutual understanding between the United States and the GCC countries. Middle East Council of American Chambers of Commerce was formerly known as American Business Council of the Gulf Countries. MECACC was founded in 1989 and is based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Virgin Hyperloop One

Virgin Hyperloop One


Hyperloop is a new mode of transportation that moves freight and people quickly, safely, on-demand, and direct from origin to destination. Passengers or cargo are loaded into the hyperloop vehicle and accelerate gradually via electric propulsion through a low-pressure tube. The vehicle floats above the track using magnetic levitation and glides at airline speeds for long distances due to ultra-low aerodynamic drag. California based Virgin Hyperloop One systems will be built on columns or tunneled below ground to avoid dangerous grade crossings and wildlife. It’s fully autonomous and enclosed, eliminating pilot error and weather hazards. It’s safe and clean, with no direct carbon emissions. What’s more – Virgin is planning on opening a hyperloop in the UAE, between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, to connect the two cities and drastically reduce travel time and cost. What was once an hour-and-a-half road trip can become a 12-minute hyperloop ride, making the two cities more integrated, cooperative, and collaborative.

Our winning design plans for the US Pavilion are based on the theme “What Moves You” and feature the power and diversity of culture, technological innovation in mobility, and commercial opportunity throughout the United States.

Important lessons learned from previous Expo experience have been thoroughly embedded in each step of planning and reporting. In all matters concerning money, we strive for an exceptional level of control, probity, and transparency. Former Ambassador Frederick M. Bush is a respected executive with a unique combination of diplomatic, political, and business experience in both the public and private sectors. Previous positions include deputy chief of staff to the vice president of the United States, assistant secretary of commerce, associate director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and U.S. Commission-er-General to the World Exposition in Seville, Spain (1992).

Working on the ground in over 60 countries, Greg Houston is a known leader in international development, public diplomacy, and multilateral government relations.  He currently serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Pavilion USA 2020, managing all aspects of the United States’ design, construction, fundraising, curation, operations, and legacy planning for Expo 2020 Dubai.  He also serves as Co-Founder and Executive Director of Big Things Group (BTG), a full-service experience design, sponsorship, and international development strategy firm.

His background includes leadership roles at Search for Common Ground, the world’s largest dedicated peacebuilding NGO; Meridian International Center, the primary implementer of flagship U.S. exchange and public diplomacy programs such as the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP); and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, one of the world’s leading think-tanks.

Greg holds a Masters with Merit from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in Public Administration with a concentration on global market economics and an undergraduate degree from the honors college of the University of Arizona in political science and sociology.  In 2011 he was named a Social Entrepreneurship Fellow (PLD, Class of 1972 Endowment) at Harvard University (HBS).

The Honorable Alan Dunn is a former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce and has been engaged in the practice of international trade and national security law since 1980. He has been a partner at Stewart and Stewart law firm in Washington, D.C. for over 15 years, leading the international transactional practice group. Before practicing law, he was a member of the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service.  As Assistant Secretary of Commerce under President George H.W. Bush, he was among senior U.S. officials responsible for forming and implementing trade policy. His expertise is in international trade law, nuclear non-proliferation policy, arms control, and export licensing.

Andrew Hendricks is co-founder of ExperiusVR,  a trusted full-service virtual and augmented reality studio.  They engage body and mind through the industry’s most advanced technologies like 360 video, photogrammetry, volumetric video, and 3D audio. Andrew is the son of media visionary John Hendricks, founder of the Discovery Channel. Andrew is also founder and CEO of Driven Experiences: Off Road Driving and Racing Schools. His racing career began in college in NASCAR Grand-AM Road Racing Series, now the IMSA Series, winning 2 Championships: one in 2008 for Ford and another in 2010 for BMW. Andrew is also co-owner of Gateway Canyons Resort and Spa in Colorado, recipient of AAA/CAA Four Diamond Awards 2018, the Condé Nast Readers’ Choice List 2017, Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Awards 2017, and Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2017. Andrew is contracted with Ford’s Vehicle Dynamics Group to develop the 2018-2019 Ford Raptor Suspensions and now in the process of developing the 2021 Ford Bronco.  Andrew is 1 of 26 drivers in the world to hold a Tier 4 Development certification from Ford. Finally, he is co-owner of Curiosity Stream, a global non-fiction SVOD (Streaming Service) and technology company founded by John Hendricks with 3 Emmy wins in the documentary category and over 1 million subscribers.

Mark Giuliani began his career with Giuliani Associates in 1986 after graduating from Wheeling Jesuit University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. After joining the firm, Mr. Giuliani received a Master’s of Architecture from the School of Architecture and Planning at the Catholic University of America. Mr. Giuliani has overseen the architectural services for nearly a billion dollars of construction. After taking over the firm, Mr. Giuliani transformed Giuliani Associates from a company focused strictly on the aviation industry to one that now offers multiple services to a variety of industries. Mr. Giuliani and his team of professionals provide services to owners, developers, investors, ranging from program development to facility management. Mr. Giuliani is the Chair of the Advisory and Development Board of the School of Architecture and Planning at the Catholic University of America. He also runs ARCH-i-TECH.TV, where architecture and technology come together.

Curt Fentress is a world leader in architectural design. In 2010, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) honored Fentress with the highest award for public architecture, the Thomas Jefferson Award, recognizing “a portfolio of accomplishments that evidences great depth while making a significant contribution to the quality of public architecture.” He was also awarded the highest honor from the AIA Western Mountain Region, the 2010 Silver Medal for “significant contributions to the profession and the citizens of the region, and transcending local boundaries in making these contributions.” He was inducted into the AIA College of Fellows in 1996, and is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Today, Fentress Architects has five international studios and a team of 150 professionals.

David Rich, Senior Vice President and Executive Producer of George P. Johnson Experience Marketing, is a global award-winning event and experience design innovator, strategist, executive producer and account manager. Recognized internationally as one of the pioneers of event strategy and strategic experience design best practices, he is the inventor of the Strategic Experience Mapping process, lauded by Event Marketer magazine for its excellence in driving events with clearer goals, big ideas, and more confident outcomes. In his more than 25-year career, he has created and managed high profile award-winning programs with Formula 1, PGA and European PGA Golf, and most recently, the development and production of the Cisco Systems Rio 2016 Olympic Brand Experience.

Christopher Kidder serves as Director of Envoy Limited, a consultancy providing management, program, project and advisory services to executives and governmental clients. He serves on the Board of Directors of several international alternative energy trade organizations. Prior to founding Envoy in 2005, he was a Director with PricewaterhouseCoopers’ (PwC) Global Capital Markets Group in London. As an appointee in the administration of US President George H. W. Bush from 1988 – 1992, Chris served as the Director of Protocol for the US Pavilion at the 1992 Universal Exposition (Expo 92) in Seville, Spain. As a member of the executive team responsible for funding and managing the United States’ historic participation in the last Universal Exposition of the 20th Century, he assisted the Chief Executive Officer in identifying, marketing concept to, and securing $15 million in sponsorship from blue-chip US corporations.

Paul Hemsworth is Vice President and Executive Creative Director at GPJ and leads the creative team in Auburn Hills, Michigan, and Nashville, Tennessee.  He and his team have designed past world expos and brand pavilions including GM Pavilion (Shanghai 2010), U.S. pavilion (Aichi 2005), and GM Pavilion (2002 Winter Olympics).

Andrew Kyrejko is a strategist partnering with leaders across trusted brands, ambitious startups, and global organizations. A studied cultural anthropologist and thorough service designer, he creates brands and experiences that drive business growth and deepen consumer loyalty. 

From digital futures and purposeful brands to modern customer experiences and connected environments, Kyrejko has put strategy to work for some of the most important organizations in the world. He adopts clients’ challenges as his own to help them stay steps ahead of changes across audiences, competitors, and markets.

Katherine brings a wealth of experience from the media, government, nonprofit, and academic sectors. She is highly regarded in the international affairs and public diplomacy arena as a strategic, forward-thinking leader.

From 2013-2016, Katherine Brown served as Executive Director of the United States Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy, a body authorized by Congress to oversee and promote U.S. government activities that intend to understand, inform, and influence foreign publics. Most recently, she was a Public Policy Manager at Facebook, Inc. where she was also in residence as a Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs Fellow.

Previously, she held numerous roles in government, including assistant to the White House national security adviser; communications adviser for the U.S. Embassy in Kabul; and professional staff member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs at the U.S. House of Representatives.

Katherine also served on the boards of the Center on Public Diplomacy at the University of Southern California and the Global Ties Foundation. She is a non-resident senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and an adjunct assistant professor at Georgetown University.

She received her Ph.D. and M.A. in communications from Columbia University and B.A. from the George Washington University.

As Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Zimbabwe under President George Bush, Steve Rhodes has served his country diligently. Presently, Ambassador Rhodes is an Adjunct Professor in the Negotiation, Conflict Resolution and Peace Building Department at California State University Dominguez Hills where he teaches the International Component. Additionally, Ambassador Rhodes is a Visiting Professor at Loyola Marymount University and the University of California Los Angeles.

As Managing Partner of Claiborne-Rhodes International, LLC.  Ambassador J. Steven (Steve) Rhodes is a leader in socially conscious proprietary business development. With expertise in oil, gas, and new energy models, Steve has successfully negotiated the acquisition of asset management businesses and represents minority professional services companies.

Steve Rhodes is an expert in marketing and development of strategic international and domestic public-private partnerships and municipal investments which have resulted in over one billion of dollars in bond issues. While Director on the Board of Directors for Ivanhoe Energy Incorporated, he succeeded in signing the largest oil field development contract in Ecuador’s history.

Steve Rhodes also served in The White House as the Chief Domestic Advisor to Vice President George Bush.  He was the primary liaison to the business community for the Vice President and managed political and constituent outreach for support of administration policy.  Steve Rhodes led major national domestic policy initiatives and prepared the Vice President for the 1984 Presidential Debate.  Two major accomplishments include the creation and management of the Southwest Border Task Force and direct advisement with the senior leadership team culminating in the creation of the Bill for the establishment of the Martin Luther King National Holiday.

While Special Assistant to President Ronald Reagan for Intergovernmental Affairs, Steve Rhodes represented the President to local elected officials from over 3,900 counties and 15,000 cities.  He presented the views of local officials to the President on administration policy, developed positive working relationships with public interest groups, and representing local officials.  Rhodes worked with the Domestic Cabinet in the creation of the Administration’s Urban Policy. He successfully built a coalition of the local government public interest groups to support the President’s economic recovery plan.  Steve Rhodes was a member of the team responsible for the Block Grants to the States program.

Steve received a Masters of Business Administration, Marketing emphasis from Pepperdine University and a Bachelors of Business Administration, Industrial Relations concentration from Loyola University in Los Angeles.  He resides in Los Angeles and remains an active member of several boards and community organizations that focus on political initiatives, social change, and education.

The Honorable Barbara Hackman Franklin is the President and CEO of Barbara Franklin Industries and is an advocate for and adviser to American companies doing business in international markets. Franklin served as the 29th U.S. Secretary of Commerce under President George H.W. Bush. As Secretary, her historic mission to China re-opened US – Chinese commercial relations.

Secretary Franklin’s trailblazing career as started as one of the first women to graduate from Harvard business school. Her career includes corporate, academic, entrepreneurial, and government work. Franklin is an expert on corporate governance, auditing, and financial reporting practices. She has served on the board of directors of 14 public companies, including Aetna, Dow Chemical, Westinghouse, and Nordstrom, 4 private companies, and numerous not-for-profit organizations. She also served under five different US presidential administrations.

Franklin is currently a member of the LafargeHolcim International Advisory Board, Zurich, Switzerland. Franklin has served as presiding director, chaired various board committees, and has been speaking and writing about corporate governance for over 30 years. She is chairman emerita of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), chairman emerita of the Economic Club of New York, and past president of the Management Executives’ Society, among her participation in many other international, educational, and cultural activities.

Dr. Jian (Jay) Wang, a scholar and consultant in the fields of strategic communication and public diplomacy, is Director of the USC Center on Public Diplomacy (CPD) and an Associate Professor at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. He previously worked for the international consulting firm McKinsey & Company, where he advised clients on matters of communication strategy and implementation across a variety of industries and sectors.

Dr. Wang has led a number of research projects on topics ranging from nation branding and nonprofit branding to corporate diplomacy and CSR practices in emerging economies. At CPD, he has formed successful partnerships on research and programming with organizations, including the BBC, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the European Union Delegation to the U.S., Global Affairs Canada, the Japan Foundation, NATO, the United Nations Foundation and the U.S. Department of State, on topics ranging from soft power in global affairs, U.S. public diplomacy and national security, to digital advocacy, public diplomacy performance and evaluation. He has been instrumental in developing professional training programs as new essential skills have arisen, including data-driven public diplomacy, storytelling for public diplomacy, and public diplomacy strategy and evaluation.

Prior to joining USC, Dr. Wang taught at Purdue University. He received his B.A. degree from Beijing University and holds an M.A. from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.

Sean O’Keefe is a longtime public administrator, national security, financial management, and aerospace industry veteran who has held leadership positions in the U.S. government, higher education, and business. As the newly appointed Phanstiel Chair in Strategic Management and Leadership, he is a member of the Maxwell School’s Department of Public Administration and International Affairs. He has also been appointed University Professor, only the 17th person in Syracuse University history to hold the title. Along with these appointments and teaching responsibilities, O’Keefe leads efforts to expand Maxwell’s partnership with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C., through new educational, research, and career development opportunities for students and faculty, while strengthening Maxwell’s presence in the nation’s capital. Concurrently, CSIS has appointed him a distinguished senior adviser.

Previously, O’Keefe was chairman and CEO of Airbus Group Inc. He also served as vice president of the General Electric Company and as chancellor of Louisiana State University (LSU). Prior to leading LSU, he was administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Previous public service posts included secretary of the navy, comptroller and chief financial officer of the Defense Department and staff director of the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee. Before leading NASA, O’Keefe was deputy assistant to the president and deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget at the White House. Between public service appointments, he held faculty posts at LSU, Penn State University, and the Maxwell School, where he served as director of national security studies and as Louis Bantle Chair of Business and Government Policy. O’Keefe earned a B.A. degree from Loyola University in New Orleans in 1977 and an M.P.A. degree from the Maxwell School when he was selected as a Presidential Management Intern in the inaugural class of 1978.

Dr. Andrew Aldrin serves as the President of the Buzz Aldrin Space Institute (BASI) and is an Associate Professor at the Florida Institute of Technology. Previously, Dr. Aldrin was President of Moon Express, responsible for day to day operations for the company. Before to coming to Moon Express, Dr. Aldrin was Director of Business Development and Advanced Programs at United Launch Alliance, where he oversaw development of corporate strategies, business capture, senior customer relations, and advanced program development for civil space markets. Prior to ULA, Dr. Aldrin headed Business Development and Advanced Programs for Boeing’s NASA Systems, and Launch Services business units. A graduate of Harvard Business School, Ken Kragen’s illustrious career far transcends the music and entertainment industries where he has spent many incredibly successful years. He has managed some of the world’s most important entertainers, including Kenny Rogers, Lionel Richie, Trisha Yearwood, Olivia Newton-John, The Bee Gees, Burt Reynolds, The Smothers Brothers, and many others. He was the creator and organizer of the historic humanitarian projects “We Are the World”, “Hands Across America”, and Cisco System’s “NetAid”.

During the past few years, Kragen has devoted an increasing amount of his time to teaching, speaking and writing as well as consulting work for leading corporations and many non-profit organizations.  He has done work for Cisco Systems, New York Life Insurance, Eastman Kodak, The Hollywood Reporter and the Country Radio Broadcasters Association to name a few.

Kragen has also produced a variety of film and television projects, ranging from “Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” on CBS to Kenny Rogers’ five ‘”Gambler” movies, and numerous series, mini-series, and films.

Kragen has lectured at Harvard Business School, USC, Loyola Marymount, the University of Tennessee and many other schools. Ken now teaches a 10-week undergraduate course at the Herb Alpert School of Music on the UCLA campus.

Kragen received the United Nations Peace Medal for the creation of “Hands Across America”, and “We Are the World”, making him one of a mere handful of private citizens to receive this honor. Among dozens of other awards, Ken Kragen has been celebrated by the NAACP, the Los Angeles Advertising Women, and the Boys And Girls Club of America. He received two MTV Awards, an American Music Award, several Emmy nominations, EBONY’s American Black Achievement Award, Manager of the Year Award from the Conference of Personal Managers and the International Citizen Of The Year Award from the International Visitors Council. He was Alumnus of the Year at his Alma mater, the University of California, Berkeley. He is the only individual ever elected President of both the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music. He has served on several charity Boards including The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, Community In Schools and USA for Africa.

Herman Rush is a seasoned professional in the entertainment industry, with more than 30 years of experience in executive, production and sales positions. Rush began his television career in 1951 with Official Films, a pioneer TV distribution firm, serving as Salesman, Regional Sales Director, Sales Manager, Vice President in charge of Sales, and a member of its Board of Directors. In 1957 he purchased Flamingo Films, a television syndication firm, and developed it into a major independent syndication company. From 1960-71, he was associated with Creative Management Associates (CMA) and its predecessor organization, General Artists Corporation (GAC), one of the world’s leading talent agencies, now known as International Creative Management (ICM).

At CMA he was president of the television division, as well as executive vice-president of the parent company, a member of the Board of Directors, and one of the company’s major shareholders. Rush was instrumental in the agency’s entry into television packaging. From 1971 to 1975, as an independent TV packager and producer, he produced a number of television movies and comedy series on ABC. In 1980 he joined Columbia Pictures as President of Columbia Pictures Television Group, and he re-established Columbia as one of the major producers and distributors of television programs.

In 1988 he was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to a Presidential Commission for a Drug-Free America. Rush was also a board member of the Just Say No Foundation and Former Chairman of the Board and current Board Member of the Entertainment Industries Council, an Entertainment industry organization established to use the influence of the entertainment industry to fight substance abuse in America and addresses other social issues.

Rush now serves as a consultant/ representative to several producers and production companies. He resides in Los Angeles with his wife and two children.
